The academic program for SSIS Middle School students is designed to address the unique needs of young adolescents. The program consists of core courses in Math, Science, Social Studies and Language Arts and Physical Education. Middle School students are also required to take exploratory courses in Art, Music, Dance, Drama, Technology and Life Skills during their three years in Middle School.
Students have some limited elective choices at grade 7. Classes are structured around the philosophy that each student is unique and that students have different learning styles and learn at different rates, hence attention to students as individuals is important. At the same time, we recognize learning is a social as well as an individual endeavor and SSIS students are taught to work cooperatively and collaboratively as well as individually.
Finally, all faculty recognize that learning is greatly enhanced by a process of inquiry, exploration, discovery and thoughtful reflection under the guidance of skillful teachers.
