SSIS provides an English as a Second Language (ESL) program for students whose first language is other than English and whose English language competency falls below grade level. Its objectives are to prepare ESL students with the English language skills and competencies needed for content studies in the regular classroom setting. In addition the program aims to provide instruction and preparation for real life social communications and interactions employing both oral and listening skills.

The following assumptions, based on research, provide the foundation for the ESL program and the delivery of services to limited proficient English speaking students in the school:

  • Mastery of a second language occurs in much the same way as a first language. The learner needs ample opportunity to hear the language spoken, comprehend meaning from context, and use the language with the assistance of a teacher, tutor, or teacher-aid in a non-threatening, supportive environment.
  • The rate at which second language is acquired varies among individuals.
  • A positive self-concept for the child is essential for healthy social functioning and expedient linguistic development.
  • Motivation is essential in second language learning.
  • Acquisition of language is enhanced through the use of a variety of teaching approaches.

The ESL Middle School program offers a SHELTERED IMMERSION ESL model. This program provides an environment in which students are taught lessons in a protected manner and through immersion. Students are being prepared to be mainstreamed into the regular classroom where they can function independently.

All non-native English speakers are evaluated by the ESL Department prior to their placement. Grade and ESL placement of students is determined by the Director of Admissions, ESL Department and the Principal.

The Middle School ESL program offers two pullout classes: Beginning English and Intermediate English. Both Beginners and Intermediate students are also immersed in regular classes. In the immersion classes, ESL students will be aided by an ESL teacher who is co-teaching the class. Students may also be immersed in a classroom taught by a dually certified ESL/Content teacher. Advanced Students are mainstreamed into the program with ESL teacher support in materials preparation and curriculum construction.

The ESL programs offers opportunities for each child to achieve proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening and to eventually function in the regular classroom as active members of the student body. Students exit the ESL program based on the following 3 criteria: proficiency examination, classroom performance and ESL teacher recommendation.
