Digital Photography I

Students will learn to use a digital camera and create images for various audiences and purposes. They will learn to evaluate, analyze and critique images and how to use software programs such as Photoshop to zoom, edit, crop, soften, blur, lighten or modify their images. Students will prepare a portfolio of their photographs and present a photographic display as a culminating project.

Drawing

The drawing class enables students interested in drawing to learn skills and techniques of drawing including space, light, perspective, and proportion. It also offers more experienced artists the opportunity to develop their existing skills through a series of projects which explore aspects of drawing. Students will use observation of nature, still life, portraits, figures and other traditional subjects for their drawings. They will be taught to use pencil, ink, pastel and colored pencil. All students will keep a sketchbook. The course will focus on the principles and elements of art and design.. Students will also identify intentions in other’s art work and understand how various interpretations can be used to evaluate various works of art.

Painting

Grades 9-12
Length: 1 Semester

Painting is self expression through the use of color. Students wil be taught a variety of techniques and explore a number of media. Students will learn color theory, use tempera water color, acrylic and oils on paper and canvas. Each student will discover his/her own style through exposure to and imitation of styles of various artists in numerous cultures. Students will keep a sketchpad.

Ceramics

Grades: 9-12
Length: 1 Semester
Credit: 0.5

The school’s recent addition of a working kiln makes this ceramics class a new and exciting art workshop. This introduction to ceramics teaches students how to manipulate clay, fire it in a kiln and create an original piece of art. Students will be taught how to use various potters tools, how to “throw a pot” and how to decorate and various means to add design, color and effects to a piece of pottery.
