
The elementary Language Arts program encourages students to gain an understanding and appreciation for creative and expository writing, poetry, drama, and to learn to communicate effectively through written and spoken language. Students are taught to apply the 6 Traits of Writing to assess their own writing and that of their peers. An integrated spelling program is used in conjunction with the reading text. Throughout the intermediate grades, the celebration of literature is the organizing principle for the language arts program as children become further acquainted with literary quality and a variety of genres. Computational fluency is a primary goal in Grade Four. Number sense continues to be developed and strengthened. Social Studies in Grade Four emphasizes different aspects of early American culture as they apply to the growth of the nation. Children use the process of inquiry to explore facets of science and health.
