First grade is an exciting time of growth in which students begin to understand literacy, numeracy, basic geography and scientific inquiry. Our young learners in Grade One develop a love of reading through creative activities. Whole class and small group forums for writing and discussion help develop oral language and communication skills. Grade One students focus on decoding strategies for reading comprehension, discover patterns in numbers and basic mathematical concepts, a sense of geography -place, scale, scope and perspective- and begin to appreciate cultures through cross curricular units. Children use the inquiry process to explore scientific questions about growing, sound, light, weather and plants. Students engage in hands-on group activities to develop interactive, cooperative and social skills.
