Mathematics

Mathematics Goals:

Computational fluency is a primary goal in Grade Four. Number sense continues to be developed and strengthened. Students are encouraged to develop computational fluency, use strategies for problem solving and begin to recognize the connectedness of mathematical topics and procedures. Manipulatives are used to provide concrete examples of abstract concepts.

Texts:

Fourth Grade Everyday Mathematics (SRA/McGraw Hill)
The Marilyn Burns Fraction Kit
Manipulatives: including playing cards, flash cards, geo-boards, fraction sets, games, pattern blocks, base 10 materials, calculators

Students who successfully complete the Grade Four mathematics program will be able to demonstrate knowledge of:

• Place value
• Whole number operations with regrouping
• Lines, line segments and rays
• Coordinate graphing and location of points on a grid
• Using ordered pairs
• Classification of triangles
• A beginning understanding of fractions (fractions of a whole number, parts of a whole, comparing and ordering)
• Reading, writing and comparing decimals (to hundredths)
• Basic operations involving time and money
• A beginning understanding of the use of graphs, and the interpretation of data
• A beginning understanding of probability within the context of spinners and dice
