Basic geography is studied through the process of mapping. Students map their neighborhood, developing a sense of place, scale, scope and perspective. Investigation of countries and families within the classroom (specifically: food, language, celebrations, and clothing) leads to an awareness and appreciation for the differences in cultures around the world. Throughout the year, relevant current events are discussed and holidays celebrated. Cross-curricular units enhance learning for the students.
Students who successfully complete the Grade One Social Studies program will be able to:
• demonstrate a knowledge of age appropriate and relevant current events
• understand that culture is passed on through generations
• demonstrate an understanding of basic mapping skills
• show knowledge and respect for community guidelines and authorities
