
Counseling Services Elementary School
SSIS provides counselors to support the elementary students and their families by promoting personal wellbeing, healthy relationships and the successful balance of academic, extracurricular and community involvement.
The elementary school counselor has a counseling curriculum and makes monthly presentations to each class on topics relevant to their academic and personal success. Topics include:
- Communication and Listening
- Bullying
- Conflict Resolution
- Self Awareness
- Diversity
- Managing Feelings and Making Choices
Along with the presentations, the counselor is available to students and families by offering individual counseling, group counseling, transition programs, and working closely with teachers on provide academic support for individual students.
Counseling Services Middle and High School
Middle school and high school students deal with many transitional issues in a short amount of time, ranging from social and academic to emotional issues. SSIS provides counselors to support students and their families in these areas by promoting personal wellbeing, healthy relationships and the successful balance of academic, extracurricular and community activities.
The counseling program differs for each grade level. In Middle School there is a counseling curriculum which includes monthly presentations to each class on topics relevant to students’ academic and personal success. Topics include:
- Effective Communication
- Bullying
- Conflict Resolution
- Organization and Study Skills
- Diversity
- Decision Making and Goal Setting
Additionally, the counselor is available to students and families for individual counseling, group counseling, and transition programs. The counselor works closely with teachers to ensure that the academic needs of the students are met with course scheduling, arrangement of tutoring, and preparation for high school.
At the high school level, the counselor’s primary focus is to assist students in meeting graduation requirements successfully and to guide students and parents through the college process. In Grade 10 the PSAT and the institutional TOEFL are administered to students. The results of these tests help to assist students and parents in evaluating student achievements and interests. Grade 11 focus is on the formal college-counseling program that continues throughout Grade 12. Presentations are made for parents and students on college/career awareness; assistance is given in researching options for after high school and preparing university applications through individual sessions, college night and college fairs. |
