SSIS provides English as a Second Language (ESL) Program for students who speak a first language other than English and whose English language competency falls below grade level. The goal of the program is to provide ESL students with the English language skills and competencies needed to succeed in the regular classroom.  In addition, the program provides instruction and preparation for real life social communications and interactions.
The following guidelines, based on research, provide the foundation for the ESL program and the delivery of services to limited English proficient students in the school:

  • Mastery of a second language occurs in much the same way as a first language.  The learner needs ample opportunity to hear the language spoken, comprehend meaning from context, and use the language with the assistance of a teacher in a non-threatening, supportive environment.
  • The rate a second language is acquired varies among students.
  • A positive self-concept for the child is essential for healthy social functioning and expedient for linguistic development.
  • Motivation is essential in second language learning.
  • Acquisition of language is enhanced through the use of a variety of teaching approaches.

All non-native English speakers are evaluated by the ESL Department prior to their placement.  Grade and ESL placement of students is determined by the Director of Admissions, ESL Department, and the Principal.   The ESL program includes a Sheltered Immersion model of instruction which provides support while simultaneously immersing the student in the mainstream classroom.  Based on their grade level, ESL students are taught in a resource classroom for one block of the schedule.  They are immersed in regular classrooms, at times with an ESL teacher involved in the instruction.  Once they develop their language skills and have demonstrated success in content area courses, they are exited from the program.

Students exit the program based on the following three criteria:  standardized examinations, classroom performance, and ESL teacher recommendation.
